Citizenship Test in North Carolina

Preparing for a Greensboro, Charlotte, or Raleigh-Durham Citizenship Test

The Goulder Immigration Law Firm helps individuals who are applying for U.S. citizenship to prepare for the required citizenship test in the USCIS North Carolina Field Offices in either Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham. All North Carolina residents have their citizenship interview and test in either the Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham USCIS Field Office.

A foreign citizen or national applying for U.S. citizenship must pass the citizenship test unless qualifications are met for exemption or waiver. The North Carolina citizenship test is divided into oral and written sections. The purpose of English sections of the test is to demonstrate the ability to speak, read, and write English. The test also includes civics questions, which cover fundamental information about U.S. history and government.

The USCIS sends applicants a notice of the appointment time for their test. Only one notice is sent and one date is scheduled, so it is important to watch for the notice in the mail.

Citizenship interview

A United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Adjudications Officer at the USCIS Field Office conducts an Initial Inter view with each applicant for citizenship or naturalization. The USCIS Adjudications Officer also administers your citizenship test.

The USCIS Adjudications Officer tests your oral and written abilities in basic English. To pass the test you must read one out of three sentences correctly out loud, write one out of three sentences correctly for the written portion of the language test and correctly answer 6 out of 10 civics and government questions. When you are done, the interviewer will evaluate your skills.

You are allowed only two opportunities to past the test. If you fail a new interview date is set during the following 60 to 90 days. You are re-tested only on the part of the test you failed—the English or civics section.

Studying for the North Carolina citizenship test

To help you prepare for the test the USCIS website provides study tools, which include:

  • Vocabulary list for English reading test
  • Reading vocabulary flash cards
  • Vocabulary list for the English written test
  • Writing vocabulary flash cards
  • Civics test lessons and test questions
